Renovating Office to Housing – Opportunities & Challenges

LA, SF & SJ, CA

DRIVEN BY MARKET DEMAND  An abundance of under-utilized office space and increased housing demand inspired BAR to research the feasibility, costs, opportunities and potential pitfalls of renovating existing office buildings to housing.

FIVE DIFFERENT BUILDINGS & LOCATIONS IN CALIFORNIA  BAR evaluated five office buildings of varying ages, construction types and locales. Together with a team of Structural and MEP Engineers, Cost Estimators and Contractors experienced in building renovation and multifamily housing, we researched codes, created concept designs and prepared a cost analysis for each site.

COST-EFFECTIVE & SUSTAINABLE  Every building is unique; our research identifies criteria that can make the conversion of office buildings into multifamily housing cost effective and marketable. It’s a win-win for developers, buyers, historic resources and the environment.
