El Capitan Hotel

Merced, CA

CELEBRATING BOTH THE OLD AND NEW  Returning a prominent corner of the city’s downtown to its historical use as a vibrant and thriving hotel, the El Capitan incorporates an annex added to the hotel in the 1920’s, celebrating both the history of this location and a city on the cusp of a new era.

FORMING A CORNERSTONE FOR DOWNTOWN RENEWAL  Conceived as a modern interpretation of the Art Deco style, the hotel retains a 1930’s-era romance while integrating modern retail storefronts and ground-floor spaces designed for 21st Century activities.

CREATING PUBLIC AND PRIVATE GATHERING SPACES  Multiple outdoor gathering spaces provide guests a variety of locations to dine and enjoy the warm summer evenings. The courtyard is a gracious outdoor room with retractable awnings, lush plantings and a food-truck tucked into the corner, making it a uniquely desirable destination.
