INSPIRATION

“Architecture should always be an invitation and a promise.” — Juhani Pallasmaa

Name three sources of inspiration: The three phases of water, in no particular order.

Describe how you see style and design coming together in architecture:
Design is a way of life; style is a constant in life.

What advice would you give to a new architect?
Sometimes the best way to speed up is to slow down.

What is your favorite building and why?
The Capilano River Hatchery in Vancouver’s North Shore. It was built in 1971 as a response to declining salmon populations after a nearby dam was constructed. The building itself forms a fish ladder and it also includes a hatchery and stewardship/research center. It is a visceral and memorable example of architecture and landscape acting as one – and both coming out for the better because of their union.
