INSPIRATION
“Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret, their rules are absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything conceals something else.”
— Invisible Cities, Italo Calvino
We have been working towards a more sustainable future. How have you seen sustainability incorporated in design?
Greater attention to sustainability in design is happily becoming increasingly prevalent. More clients are asking for increased performance and healthy buildings, which drives all of us toward more integrated thinking and better designed buildings. As Director of Sustainability at BAR, my goal is to continuously increase our individual and collective literacy in the myriad topics that live under the sustainability ‘canopy’.
What advice would you give to a new architect?
Be curious, work on a variety of project types when you are starting your career and travel/work in different places to gain different perspectives.
What makes really great design?
Clarity of composition, graceful proportions, sculpted light, a restrained palette and elements of surprise.
