INSPIRATION
“We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in our hands to make a difference.” — Nelson Mandela
How do you view the role of the architect/architecture in creating a more diverse, equitable and inclusive world?
Architects and designers, since they are engaged in the creation of spaces where people live, work and play are uniquely positioned to make a difference by designing spaces that support human and environmental resilience. There is an opportunity and responsibility to arrive at design solutions that advance the highest ideals and goals for ALL of humanity, embracing and celebrating diverse thought and perspectives, and undoing systemic inequality and injustice via new and renewed built environments.
Architect, living or dead with whom I would love to talk shop with and why:
Leonardo da Vinci. For his unquenchable curiosity about everything. For his insanely inventive imagination. For his seemingly mysterious yet essentially logical rationale. For his extremely diverse talent and pursuits, and for defining what it is to be a humanist. No doubt it would be a wide ranging conversation.
What are some causes you are passionate about?
Protecting the health of our oceans! Being a water sign and spending childhood summers on the ocean, I am keen to see our oceans well taken care of and preserved for generations to come. Annually I support several nonprofits in their efforts to clean up coastlines and oceans, to stop the inflow of plastics and to educate the public about marine life, scientific discovery and the exploration of biodiversity and the environment. I also enjoy participating in water sampling and coastal clean ups. My favorite organizations include 4Ocean, WBNER, MBL Woods Hole and Marine Mammal Center Marin.
