INSPIRATION

“The minute I design something that goes into a public space…it belongs to the people and the community. They create memories there, give that space life and build on the narrative of the building. That’s the power of design.”
— Yinka Ilori

What is your experience incorporating sustainability into design?
I have been fortunate enough to always work for firms where the notion of “sustainability” or environmental consciousness is always integral to every project, rather than an afterthought. It comes down to addressing sustainability from day one and working to integrate not just the easy or straightforward solutions, but the also the bold, more innovative strategies.

What made you decide to be an architect?
Architecture is this fascinating duality between the built, more permanent form and the dynamic, fluid activity of people and communities. I love creating spaces for people to come together and watching how they transform a building or a room in ways we never considered. Buildings have the ability to provide basic needs like shelter and safety, but also to provide both intentional and unexpected community connections.

Favorite architectural term:
I love when we refer to the “fabric” of the neighborhood. It creates this visual of the built environment as a quilt of unique but complementary pieces that, when stitched together, create this vibrant whole. The context is critical with any project, and consideration of not only the community within the building but within the surrounding area can make for a more successful project.
