“What I dream of is an art of balance.” — Henri Matisse
Architect, living or dead with whom you would love to talk shop with and why?
I would love to chat with Carlo Scarpa and pick his brain about all things design and detail related. An Italian architect and designer, he was influenced by the materials, landscape, and history of Venetian culture, as well as that of Japan, and translated his interests in history, regionalism, invention, and the techniques of the artist and craftsman into ingenious glass and furniture design.
Name one building that has inspired you. Describe why you were inspired:
Tadao Ando’s Chichu Art Museum in Naoshima, Japan, was incredibly moving. The contrast of the building framing views in a stunning, natural setting was a breathtaking composition of nature and architecture. Similarly, the way the art was seamlessly integrated with the architecture was yet another beautiful balance.
Tell us about any volunteer work or causes you are passionate about:
I’m passionate about the work of BAR’s Social Impact Group, which I chair. We are involved in a variety of local organizations and events. It’s a great way to get involved in the community, while also supporting related causes to design and the AEC industry.
When did you know and what made you decide you wanted to be an architect?
I’ve known I wanted to be an architect since the second grade. A “dream job” project and biography about Julia Morgan that stemmed from early interests in math and art has developed into an aligned career and passion.
Name your favorite, or most exciting project at BAR and why:
I really enjoyed the experience of getting to work on Law Residence in Paso Robles, CA. I’m familiar with and love the region from having gone to school near there, and had also previously visited Law Winery, which was one the reasons I knew about BAR prior to working here. Not only was working on the home a full circle moment for me, but I felt deeply connected to the design and context.
