INSPIRATION / SELECTED PROJECTS

“Easy is boring.”

How are you contributing to the growth and development at BAR?
I’m an active member of our QA Core Group, responding to internal questions that range from office policies and standards to specific building codes and interpretations, or even general ‘best’ practice questions. I have always placed a high value on knowledge sharing, which I believe is essential to our profession, and I am happy to share or help whenever I think I have something to add.

Architect, living or dead with whom you would love to talk shop with and why?
One of the Louis’s… Louis Sullivan or Louis Kahn. Probably Louis Kahn. I’d love to hear more of what Brick has to say. Also, visiting his Phillips Exeter Academy Library building was quite impactful as an undergraduate architectural student.

What hobbies/activities do you enjoy outside of work?
I like to brew my own beer and have been home brewing for over a decade now and have brewed 26 different beers so far. I like the process and am fascinated with the history of brewing and the history of all the different types of beer made throughout the centuries. Evidence of brewing goes all the way back to ancient Sumer in roughly 4000 BCE.

What advice would you give to a new architect?
Ask a lot of questions. Don’t get discouraged. Learn from your mistakes. Take pride in your work, no matter the task.

What is your favorite building in LA and why?
The Getty Center. I find there are a number of elements I enjoy that relate to my love of Machu Picchu as a project. The materiality, location, terracing of outdoor plazas and gardens, and the distinct sense of arrival (the tram to get there provides the anticipation).
